KZOO FILM PHOTO began as a way to share my photos in a way other than social media, to channel my creativity into something tangible and real, and as a way to raise money for mutual aid. The zine has become a pillar of my anti-capitalist agenda. Read more

what is source:water?
a response to late-stage capitalism and escalating climate catastrophe, i collaborate with the environment to create analog images. i expose and develop photographic materials on-site, using the location’s available water supply and foraged materials to create place-based developers.
in 2021, i started developing black and white film exclusively in caffenol, a homemade film developer made from coffee, washing soda, and ascorbic acid […]. developing film in this way, i found that i could reduce the harm of my photographic process on the local ecology. it also allowed for endless creativity and experimentation. while using this low impact developer, i began to consider how i could create images in collaboration with the environment in and of which I was photographing.

[This is an excerpt from my artist’s statement that was distributed as a zine for my Care Before Profit: A Diabetic Perspective on Healthcare Under Capitalism photography installation on Friday, Nov. 01, 2024 / 5-8 PM]
[Care Before Profit] is a direct response to the status quo of for-profit so-called-healthcare. Through the production of the work, I have created agency and meaning for myself and, I hope, for others living with chronic illness. In many ways, the art itself is a reflection of what it is like to live with diabetes: a practice in accepting and embracing imperfect results in a complex and (at times) unpredictable process. Look closely and you may see what I mean. As you take it in, I encourage you to consider: what does it feel like to live in an economic system that values profits more than one’s own life, and in a culture that keeps that system thriving?… Read more
ISSUE 08 (the caffenol issue)

in spring of 2024, after three years of processing my own film in caffenol, i sought to expand my database of film stocks and their caffenol development times. initially motivated by economic uncertainty, i wanted to see if offering an eco/experimental film processing service could be a viable form of income for me, for nothing else other than to help cover part of the costs of making art.
i made an open call to photographers: anyone willing to expose a roll of film and mail it to me would have it developed and scanned for free, and i’d send them a zine in return.
i now have a database of 33 film stocks with developer recipes and developing times that i have found work best for each film, including recipes and times for pushing and pulling each film x number of stops.
within this zine, you’ll see photos from each contributing photographer with the film stock, developer, times, and temperatures all noted.
all of the film was developed by me in paterson tanks with one minute constant agitation, followed by ten seconds of agitation/three inversions every minute until the total development time was complete.
some film was stand developed which also included one minute constant agitation with the tank being left to stand still for the remaining development time.

if it isn’t free, is it really a zine? zines and diy publishing have always been rooted in the free exchange of information and ideas, and are a place where counterculture thrives. in a capitalist system, the exchange of information is controlled by the wealthy in order to further concentrate their power and to oppress everyone else. diy publishing is an alternative to mainstream, corporate, gov’t controlled media platforms–zines give us a radical way to share ideas, imagine what is possible, and build meaningful connections with each other. copies of KZOO FILM PHOTO will always be free and can be found throughout so-called kalamazoo in little free libraries. IF YOU CAME TO THIS ZINE AT NO COST TO YOU, CONSIDER CONTIRBUTING MONEY TO COVER THE COSTS OF PRODUCTION.
some copies of KZOO FILM PHOTO will always be free and can be found throughout so-called kalamazoo’s network of little free libraries.
revenue from this project provides free menstrual supplies and diapers in the so-called kalamazoo and battle creek area.
