I ordered a roll of film washi w in 120 format last fall (along with x in 135 and f in 120) and had been sitting on it for a couple of months, not knowing what I wanted to photograph with it.

Eventually, I loaded it into my lubitel 2 twin lens reflex when I enrolled in the Kalamazoo Institute of Art’s* winter semester darkroom class. Having access to the KIA’s resources, and Mary Whalen’s advice, it seemed like a good time to expose and develop the roll of w, given that it needed to be processed under a red light in open trays—something that I could do at home, but only with difficulty.
(Initially, I was going to develop it using caffenol, but I went with the traditional hc-110 in order to adhere to the data sheet/processing directions as closely as possible. It was my first time exposing and processing a roll like this and I knew my exposures were probably off, so I opted to eliminate the variable of processing with an untested devloper.)
About half the roll was very underexposed. Here are some others that I made in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.
*Speaking of the KIA, the culmination of the 2024–2025 resident artists’ work will be on display in the Kirk Newman Art School commons from May 2–June 1, 2025–some of my friends have art on display and you should totally go see it!
